Harold Wright Brown, 90, of Waterloo, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at Cedar Valley Hospice.

Harold was born in Dumont on April 18, 1922, son of Henry Augustus and Daisy Wright Brown.

He is survived by a nephew, Dr. Glen Groothuis of Cedar Falls; and a niece, Lois Lamb of Grants Pass, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Helen Groothuis; a brother, Harry G. Brown; and a nephew, Ivan Groothuis.

A graduate of Waterloo West High and a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa with a major in music, Mr. Brown lived, worked and studied music in New York City and abroad for the next 60 years, during which time he also received a master’s degree in music from Columbia University, NYC. Harold moved to Friendship Village in January 2010.

During his long career as a concert pianist, Mr. Brown had performed in Munich, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt An Nain, Canada, Mexico and 47 of the lower 48 states. During the 1960s, Mr. Brown spent seven years in Germany enhancing his music skills, including 4 ½ years at the College of Music in Berlin.

In recent years he was employed at three large well-known New York City churches on 5th Avenue: 5th Avenue Presbyterian, St. Thomas Episcopal, and Norman Vincent Peal’s Church, the Marble Collegiate Dutch Reformed Church. In addition, he was employed regularly for many years at Temple Emanu-El, the largest Jewish Synagogue in the western Hemisphere and Blessed Sacrament, one of the largest Catholic churches in New York City.

In accord with Mr. Brown’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. It was his desire that his body be donated to medical science. Thus, his body has been donated to Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, to be used for medical research purposes.
