Sherman Edwin Mapes of Fountain Hills, Ariz., and formerly from Green Valley, Ariz., Ankeny, Dubuque, Cedar Falls and Waterloo, passed away on Aug. 20, 2012, from natural causes.

Sherm was born on June 28, 1915, in Sioux Falls, S.D., the fourth of six children of Louis and Alice Mapes. He was united in marriage in Waterloo with Ora Jean Stanfield in 1937. He was a loving, caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed.

Beginning in 1934, he worked 41 years for John Deere. He started in the gear department, rose to the position of general superintendent of the factory and foundry of the Waterloo Works. In 1961 he became general manager of the John Deere Dubuque Works. He retired in 1975. He was also involved with the Boy Scouts, Finley Hospital Board, the Board of First National Bank of Dubuque as well as other community organizations. He enjoyed his gun collection, hunting, fi shing and boating.

He is survived by two sons, James (Susan) of Ankeny and Richard (Mary) of Spokane Valley, Wash.; daughter Julie Lavacek (Bob) of Hazel Green, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Alyson Overton, Michelle Loder, Robert Mapes, Amy Mapes, Sara Lynch, Lisa Lavacek and Jamie Lavacek; and five great-grandchildren: Ella Overton, Olivia Overton, Abigail Loder, Andrew Loder and Mae Lynch.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Ora Jean; daughter Carolyn Ann; son Robert Louis; parents; brothers Roland and Donald; and sisters Lois, Mildred and Theo.

A memorial service was held Friday, Aug. 24, at 11 a.m. at Messinger Mortuary Chapel, Fountain Hills. Interment will be at Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery.

We all lost a wonderful role model and a great friend on that day! We want to recognize and thank Marsha Brizzie for the exceptional care he received during the last six months in her home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
