[Waterloo Courier, Sunday, July 29, 2012]

Bertha Jane (Monasky) Moore went home to be with her Lord on July 26, 2012. She was born in Binghamton, N.Y. on July 5, 1929 to Joseph and Marie (Turanak) Monasky.

She met her future husband, David Lee Moore, at age 15 in high school. They became high school sweethearts, were married on June 14, 1952, and recently celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary at Friendship Village here in Waterloo. Bertha supported David in ministry roles in Binghamton, N.Y. at the First Christian Church from 1952 to 1956, and in Waterloo, Iowa at Walnut Street and later Walnut Ridge Baptist Church from 1956 until 1974. They then served at Cedar Hill Baptist Church and Bethlehem Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio until 1998, when they returned to Walnut Ridge and Waterloo.

Bertha is survived, along with David, by her children Suzanne Marie Oettel (husband Gordon) of St. Cloud, Minn., Elaine Faith Mellinger (husband John) of Springfield, Ill., Christine Anne Hlad (husband Tom) of Columbus, Ohio, Grace Lucylle MacKeverican (husband Jack) of Columbus, Ohio, and Timothy John Moore (wife Stephanie) of Mayfield Heights, Ohio. She was also the loving Grandma of 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Also, brother Ernest (wife Marylou) Monasky of Roanoke, Va., sister Helen (husband Clifford) Fishback of Plantation, Fla., and brother Richard Monasky of Cleveland, Ohio.

Bertha had a deep and consistent love for her Lord, and was a humble and disciplined student of scripture and servant of others. Her relationship with Christ was lived out in a wonderful marriage and homelife that impacted not only her family but many others. She taught Sunday School and Bible studies, sang in church choirs, served as a deaconess, and mentored younger women. She also exercised a tremendous gift for hospitality that welcomed scores of missionaries, youth, and others into her home, which served as a place of warmth, security, refreshment, and respite for many.

Bertha would not have wanted to be praised or singled out for her life or its impact, but her consistent, faithful, and loving example of a life lived knowing, trusting, and honoring God has left an immeasurable and eternal imprint on her family and many others with whom her earthly path crossed. Of her it could truly be said that to live was Christ, and to die, gain (Philippians 1:21). To God be the glory, great things He has done.

Services 10 a.m. Monday at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church with interment at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Locke Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Walnut Ridge Christian School.
