CEDAR FALLS — Ruth M. Smith, 88, of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, July 11, at NewAldaya Lifescapes in Cedar Falls of natural causes.

She was born July 20, 1923, in Waterloo, daughter of C. Walter and Bertha C. Nordman Hyde. She married Oliver George Coon in 1943 in Waterloo. They later divorced. She married William O. Smith in April 1947 in Waterloo. They later divorced.

She graduated from West Waterloo High School in 1942 and attended Gates Business School and Hawkeye Tech. She worked at Siebert’s Laundry and in housekeeping at Covenant Medical Center. She was also a senior companion at Friendship village for 10 years, later working in the laundry department, retiring in 2000. She was a former member of Waterloo Eagles Auxiliary.

Survived by five daughters: Phyllis Blew of Kansas City, Mo., Luana (Jim) King of San Angelo, Texas, Laurene (Robert) Saathoff of Clarksville, Linda Holt of Mitchellville and Tammy (Kenny) Scott of Oskaloosa; a son, William (Tami) Smith of Jesup; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four sisters: Lucille Trask and Betty Smith, both of Waterloo, Marion Dehut of Ankeny and Edna Adams of Cary, N.C.

Preceded in death by her parents; her stepdad; a sister, Elsie Lawson; and five brother-in-laws, Frank Trask, Guy Lawson, Lloyd Dehut, Clial Smith and Stanley Adams.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Locke Funeral Home, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo. Public visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Juvenile Diabetes or American Heart Association.
