WATERLOO — Robert Pownell, 74, of Denver, Colo., formerly of Waterloo, died Monday, July 23, at Denver Hospice.

He was born July 2, 1938, in Iowa City, son of E.E. and Belvah Davis Pownell. He married Diana A. Grotegut on April 19, 1961, in Waterloo. She died Feb. 5, 2011.

Mr. Pownell graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1957. He was a firefighter for Waterloo Fire Rescue from 1965 to 1994, when he retired. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1957 to 1960 and was a member of Masonic Lodge Waterloo Lodge 105 A.F.&A.M. and past master.

Survived by two sons, Shawn (Lorraine) of Denver and Scot (Annette) of Madison, Wis.; two daughters, Dawn (Kyle) Pownell Palmer of Tolleson, Ariz., and Dina Pownell of Denver; and four grandchildren, Winston and Franklin Palmer and Spenser and Aiden Pownell.

Visitation: 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Locke Funeral Home, with a 6 p.m. public Masonic service by Waterloo Lodge 105 A.F.& A.M.
