CARSON, POWERS, MCLAUGHLIN

WATERLOO, IOWA - Virgil J. Carson, 71, of Waterloo, died at home Sunday, June 10, 2012, of cancer.

He was born February 9, 1941, in Waterloo, son of Ollie Reed and Thelma Ruth Powers Carson. He married Cindy Kay McLaughlin on October 30, 1976.

Mr. Carson earned his GED in 1967 and joined the Waterloo Police Department as an officer until 1974. In 1974 he opened Carson Motors, and in 1988 started a new business, Carson Coaches, which he sold in 1999. He served as the code enforcement officer for the city of Waterloo until 2001.

He last worked as property and evidence coordinator for the Waterloo Police Department, retiring in March 2012 due to his health. He was a former member of the Elks Club.

He is survived by his wife; a brother-in-law, Craig Backen of Los Angeles; a nephew, Tony (Michelle) Geist of Liscomb; two nieces, Patty (Kenn) Wandschneider of La Porte City and Jenny (Brian) King of Cedar Falls; 12 grandnephews and two grandnieces.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lyle; a sister, Barb Geist; a sister-in-law, Sandy Lohmann; and a brother-in-law Gary McLaughlin.

Graveside services will be on Friday at Garden of Memories Cemetery, with an escort and honor guard by the Waterloo Police Honor Guard. Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
