Rex Alan Olsen, 64, passed away peacefully at Overland Park, Kansas, Regional Medical Center on June 12, 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Linda, and their sons, Christopher and wife Erica of La Palma, California, and John and wife Hallie of Atlanta. Rex was the proud grandfather of Nicole, Carter, Pace and Ryan.

Rex grew up in Waterloo and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1970. He served in the U.S. Army at the Presidio of San Francisco. He was an air traffic controller at the Olathe Air Route Control Center and later worked for the United Nations Developmental Program in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as an air traffic control instructor. He retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2005 after working there for 19 years.

Besides delighting in being with his sons and their families, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and their dog, Greta, playing golf with his buddies, target shooting and fishing. We will all miss his humor, his simile and his love.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Overland Park Regional Medical Center for their care, compassion and support.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, honoring his daughter-in-law's battle with breast cancer or to St. Jude Children's Hospital. A memorial celebration of Rex's life will be held later this summer.

Arrangements are by Cremation Center of Kansas City, (913) 384-5566.
