Walburga "Burga" Vieth, 101, of Des Moines, formerly of rural Hudson, IA., died Saturday, July 11, 2009, at Bright-Kavanaugh House in Des Moines.

She was born June 7, 1908, in Schillingen, Germany, the daughter of John and Lucille (Berens) Werner. She was united in marriage to Emil Vieth October 28, 1928, in Chicago, IL. He died March 24, 1988.

Burga, at age 18, with an older sister, Theresa, boarded the ship Columbus and sailed to the United States through Ellis Island on October 22, 1926. They settled in Chicago, where she met Emil, who came to America on January 28, 1925, aboard the ship Munchen. Around 1930, the couple moved to Hubbard, IA where they rented a farm from a relative. On February 25, 1941, they purchased their farm in Hudson, IA, near Dike, and farmed until retirement. Walburga enjoyed gardening and was a wonderful bread maker.

She is survived by two sons, John (Theresa) Vieth of Jesup, IA, and Dennis Vieth of Williams, IA; two daughters, Emily (Gregory) Whittle of Altoona, IA, Mary (Keith) Groat of Bakersfield, CA; 21 grandchildren; 53 great grandchildren; and 15 great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers; and seven sisters.
