EVANSDALE — Joseph P. Macomber, 86, of Evansdale, died at home Monday, April 2, after a lengthy illness.

He was born Nov. 11, 1925, in Queen City, Mo., son of John A. and Naza M. Flick Macomber.

He married Nelda B. Williams on June 16, 1951, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. She died May 6, 1994.

Mr. Macomber served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was employed as a machine operator for John Deere for 26 years, retiring in 1985.

Survived by two sons, Ricky L. (Nancy) of Evansdale and Rodney L. of Nashua; two daughters, Theresa M. Macomber of Mount Vernon and Kris J. (John) Shaffer of Memphis, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four brothers, George A. (Jean) Elam of Unionville, Mo., J. Aaron (Gloria) Macomber of Luray, Mo., Teddy O. (Mary) Macomber of Webster, Fla., and Richard E. Macomber of Waterloo; two sisters, L. Kay (Don) Sidwell of Queen City, Mo., and Leora F. Owens; and a special friend, Clara Neuenkirk and her family of Evansdale.

Preceded in death by two brothers, William and Baxter; two sisters, Minnie Neuenkirk and Nola Hilty; and two half brothers, Edward and Henry Ankeny.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Garden View Chapel Funeral Home, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Iowa National Guard Honors Detail. Visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and for an hour before services Friday at the funeral home.
