CEDAR FALLS - Mary Aletha Wood, 97, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, at the Western Home Communities Martin Center.

She was born Feb. 18, 1909, in Alden, daughter of John and Maude Harris Carney. She married Roscoe Dean Wood June 13, 1936, in Alden. He died May 19, 1997. The couple lived in Homewood, Ill., prior to moving to Cedar Falls in June 1993.

Prior to her retirement in 1971, she had been an elementary school teacher for more than 18 years in the Matteson (Ill.) School System. She received her two-year certificate from UNI.

Aletha loved her family dearly and was a wonderful role model as wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher and neighbor. She was faithful in worship and gave "thanks" in all, even her last words. She delighted in receiving flowers, and then was quick to share them with others, often at their bedside. She was an avid bridge player, loved winning, playing games with her family, reciting menus and a good joke. She cared greatly for her friends and will be missed by all those whose lives she's touched.

Survived by a daughter, Lynda (Mark) Fiester of Independence; a son, Jack (Bonnie) Wood of Ludington, Mich.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, granddaughter Kim (Scott) Flinn, Carney and Katie of Ramona, Calif., granddaughter Lora (Emmett) Leopardi, Rachel and Kurtis Smith of South Lebanon, Ohio, grandson Lawren (Sheryl) Raber of Mesa, Ariz., granddaughter Lisa (Chad) Gammon, Kaitlyn and Laurel of Cedar Rapids, and granddaughter Lynn (Toby) Bartlett, expecting in December, of Marion; and a sister, Virginia Johnson of Shelburn, Vermont.

Services: 9 a.m. Saturday at Western Home Chapel, with burial in Hampton Cemetery. Public visitation from 8 a.m. until service time Saturday at the chapel. Richardson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Presbyterian Church Camp, Wyoming, Iowa; First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Falls; or Western Home.
