WATERLOO - George M. Bennett, 67, of Waterloo, died Sunday, March 18, at Iowa Medical and Classification Center, Coralville, after a long illness with cancer.

He was born April 26, 1944, in Elma, son of Alvin and Lillian Betts Bennett. He married Sharon Sprague on July 13, 1966, in Waterloo.

Mr. Bennett graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1964. He worked for Matt Parrott and Sons Co., Chamberlain Manufacturing Co., then later for John Deere Manufacturing, retiring in 1998. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1968, receiving an honorable discharge.

Survived by his wife; two daughters, Tammy (Troy) Laughlin of Gilbertville and Linda Bennett of Burlington; a son, John (Michelle) of Waterloo; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Darlene Johnson of Des Moines, Mandy (Bruce) Johnson of Mesa, Ariz., and Rosy (Frank) Geerts of Charles City; and two brothers, Alvin Bennett of Waterloo and Fritz (Lorraine) Bennett of Portland, Ore.

Preceded in death by a grandson, Jordan Laughlin; and a brother, Fred.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Locke Funeral Home, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Evansdale AMVETS Post 31. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

George had a passion for music and mopar. He was very intelligent on many different levels and was a very patient person. He is loved very deeply and will be missed constantly by his family and friends.
