WATERLOO — Charles Richard “Dick” Shane, 100, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, March 13, at Lakeview Landing of Friendship Village.

He was born Dec. 17, 1911, in Waterloo, son of Charles N. and Maud Weatherwax Shane. He married Mildred Hendry Oct. 12, 1935. She died in May 1973. He married Vivian M. Wintakger Taylor Oct. 6, 1973, at Universalist Church in Minneapolis. She died June 27, 2009.

He graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1928, and from Gates Business College in 1929. Mr. Shane received a bachelor’s degree in education from UNI in 1933. He worked for James Black Department Store in 1933, retiring as comptroller in 1971. He also served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942-1944. He was a member of Unitarian Universalist Society of Black Hawk County, Kiwanis Club, Kappa Delta Pi, Sigma Tau Delta, Pi Gamma Mu, American Legion, Boy Scouts of America, UNI Alumni Association, UNI New Horizons Band, and Hawkeye Chapter of the American Red Cross and its Disaster Action Team.

Survived by three daughters, Emily Taylor of Dallas, Pamela Taylor Rebstock (J.D.) of Gainsville, Fla., and Cynthia Taylor Gomez (W. Alexander) of Sacramento, Calif.; three grandchildren, Brittany Julia Beckwith, Raleigh James Rebstock and Taylor Alexander Gomez; and a niece, Jennifer Shane Pattison (Michael) of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Preceded in death b: a son, Larry Taylor; and a brother, Herbert T. Shane.

Memorial services: will be held at a later date, with inurnment in New Barclay Cemetery. There will be no visitation. His body has been donated to University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Locke Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to American Red Cross Hawkeye Chapter or the Unitarian Universalist Society of Black Hawk County.
