WATERLOO - Ethel "Athanasia" Gartelos, 89, of Waterloo, died Sunday, March 11, at Allen Hospital.

She was born Aug. 15, 1922, in Waterloo, daughter of Gust and Ofelia Georgiadou Pateras. She married George P. Gartelos on July 14, 1946, in Waterloo. He died March 24, 2004.

Ethel and her husband owned and operated the Diamond Cafe for 28 years, retiring in 1974.

Survivors include two sons, Nicholas Gartelos of Cheyanne, Wyo., and Dean (Mona) Gartelos of Lisle, Ill.; a daughter, Elaine Gartelos of Waterloo; six grandchildren, George (Katina) Gartelos, Dean (Chrisanne) Gartelos, Stacie Gartelos, Michelle (Joe) Sarb, Lisa Gartelos and Christine Gartelos; and six great-grandchildren, Nick, Constantine, Kaliana, Victoria and Michael Gartelos and Owen Sarb.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Demetrious Greek Orthodox Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. Trisagion service.

Memorials may be directed to the church.

Ethel was very active in her church, sang in the church choir, organized many fundraising events and did charitable work with the Philoptochos Ladies Society and the Daughters of Penelope. Her faith, family and friends were extremely important to her. Her six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren brought her great joy. May her memory be eternal.
