PIONEER DEAD AT LA PORTE

THOMAS EDWARDS DEPARTED THIS LIFE THURSDAY EVENING

LA PORTE CITY, IOWA —Thomas Edwards, a pioneer of this section and one of the most beloved of citizens, passed away Thursday evening about 8:00 o'clock at the home of a daughter, Mrs. E. E. Salmon, in this place.

Deceased was well-known and prominent here — a man of most kindly nature and whose heart was full of love for all mankind. He was a particularly devoted parent, and the children have suffered a great loss in his demise. The community sympathizes deeply with them, and there is widespread realization that Uncle Tommy made life worth while as he lived it.

Mr. Edwards was born in Muncy, Pennsylvania, Jan. 2, 1822. He was married there to Sarah Hasser. They came to Black hawk county in, 1889, and settled on a farm 3½ miles west of La Porte. There they lived for years and prospered and reared a large family.

Children surviving are B. L. Edwards, Waterloo; Mrs. Charles Clark, Eagle Township; A. D. Edwards, Colsey, Oklahoma; Mrs. E. E. Salmon, La Porte; Mrs. D. W. Shearrer, Clark, South Dakota; Mrs. A. K. Baker, Worthington, Minnesota; Mrs. H. Clark, Mason City, Iowa; Mrs. R. R. Cummins, Waterloo.

Funeral service will be held Sunday at 2:30 from the M. E. Church in this place, conducted by Rev. F. N. Willis.
