WATERLOO - Robert O. "Bob" Hakenholz, 97, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Covenant Medical Center from complications of pneumonia.

He was born Jan. 7, 1915, in Sioux City, son of Otto and Inga Isaacsen Hakenholz. He married Dorothy M. Linberg on Sept. 23, 1939, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sioux City.

Mr. Hakenholz was an 1933 graduate of East High School, Sioux City. He began working for the Standard Oil Co. in 1934 as a mail clerk, which was interrupted by World War II. He served in the U.S. Navy as a machinist on an LST for nearly two years. He returned to Standard Oil and was transferred to Waterloo, then back to Mason City. He was eventually transferred to Des Moines and in the 1960s to Kansas City, retiring in 1977 with 43 years with Standard/AMOCO.

Survived by two daughters, Carol (Bill) Straka of Waterloo and Jan (Steve) Marks of Stillwater, Okla.; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Straka (Kate Somvongsiri) of Washington, D.C., and Joshua Straka (Katie Sieben); four great-grandchildren, John and Henry of Cottage Grove, Minn., Stephanie Marks of Plano, Texas, and Christopher Marks (Melissa) of Norman, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his wife; five sisters, Louise McDonald, Alyce Hoflund, Lily Motycka, Fern Troup and Betty Webb.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with inurnment at 1 p.m. in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church, Cedar Valley Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Bob was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He cared well for Dorothy in their home for eight years as her Alzheimer’s progressively took over their lives.
