WATERLOO - Richard L. "Dick" King, 79, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Friendship Village Pavilion.

He was born Sept. 7, 1932, in Waterloo, son of Arthur and Gladys Akin King. He married Mary Van Abbema on Sept. 3, 1954, in Chicago.

Mr. King graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1950 and earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Iowa State University in 1955. He was the Waterloo City Engineer from 1966 to 1974, consulting engineer for Brice and Petrides, then Black Hawk County Engineer from 1966 to 2008, when he retired. He was past president of the Iowa Chapter of American Public Works Association.

Survived by his wife; three sons, David (DeMaris) of Prospect, Ky., Jerry (Sheri) of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Paul (Jennifer) of Palatine, Ill.; seven grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, Robert D. (Marion) of Waterloo; and a sister, Mary Iehl of Waterloo.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. April 14 at Waterloo First United Methodist Church. Visitation from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Locke Funeral Home, where there will be a 4:30 p.m. prayer service.

Memorials may be directed to Waterloo First United Methodist Church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
