[Waterloo Courier, Thursday, February 23, 2012]

CEDAR FALLS - Jerry E. Shaw, 70, Rapid City, S.D., passed away Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, at Rapid City Regional Hospital due to injuries from a fall at his home.

Jerry was born Oct. 7, 1941, in Cedar Falls, to Lawrence and Phyllis (Mathes) Shaw. He graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1961.

He served in the U.S. Army for two years, returning home to Cedar Falls where he worked at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works.

His goal was to leave John Deere, and he accomplished that by buying "fixer-upper" houses, remodeling and selling them.

He was captured by his wife, Barbara, on May 2, 1970. She joined him in his real estate adventures. In 1985, Jerry, Barb, daughter Julie, son Tom, two dogs, four cats and two guinea pigs moved to Rapid City, where Jerry re-established his real estate and landlord business. He also discovered a love of dogs as he "allowed" his wife to bring home quite a few rescued four-foots over the years.

The final act of kindness was to give the gift of life through organ and tissue donation.

Missing him greatly will be his wife, Barbara Shaw of Rapid City; his daughter, Julie (Mark Miller) of Bellingham, Wash.; his son, Tom (Denis Stearns) Shaw of Seattle; his dogs, Tuggerbee, Chance, Benji and Scamper; his sister, Jill (Ron) Krause of Boone; brothers, Jay (Roberta) Shaw of Cantonment, Fla., and Jack Shaw of Iowa City; several half brothers; a half sister; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather; and his grandparents.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Humane Society of the Black Hills.

Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at Kirk Funeral Home, Rapid City, with Pastor Irvin Fields officiating.
