WATERLOO - Paul Miroslav Koloc, 75, of Silver Spring, Md., formerly of Waterloo, died Friday, Feb. 17, at Holy Cross Hospital, Silver Spring.
He was born June 8, 1936, in Waterloo, son of Miles and Hazel Arnold Koloc. He married Beverly Hargis in 1961, and they were divorced in 1967. He married Deanna Cooper on Dec. 29, 1969, in Leesburg, Va.
Paul attended St. Edward's Church, graduated from Waterloo West High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Loras College. After more than 20 years of employment at Kemlite Laboratories, Korad Corporation, Raytheon, the Naval Applied Science Laboratory and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, he founded and was president of Prometheus II, Ltd.
Survivors include his wife, Deanna; his son, Paul T. Koloc of California; three daughters, Tanya (Billy) Costigan, Tina Koloc and Beverly Edwards, all of Maryland; seven grandchildren, Nicole, Kristin and Joseph Delmar, Colin "C.J." Costigan, Elisha Koloc and James and Jessica Edwards; two great-grandchildren, Jeremiah and Taysia; a brother, Arnold (Vivian) Koloc of Oelwein; three sisters, Eileen (Francis) Monachino of Pennsylvania, Kay (Daniel) Sullivan of Cedar Rapids and Rita (Steve) Dellinger of Virginia; an uncle, Earnie (Faye) Arnold of Des Moines; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Edward's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation will continue at the church for an hour before services Friday.
Paul was an inventor, entrepreneur and engineering physicist. He was granted numerous United States and international patents, ranging from early laser technology to motion target indicators to his innovative PLASMAKtm technology. In the late 1980s he produced the first stable, long-lived magnetoplasmoid in air at standard pressure.
