WATERLOO, Iowa -- James W. "Jay" Wickham Jr., 86, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, Sept. 3 at Parkview Nursing & Rehab Center, Waterloo.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at St. Edward Catholic Church, Waterloo. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Waterloo, where military rites will be accorded by the Waterloo Amvets Post 19 and Evansdale Amvets Post 31. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service, West Ridgeway, Waterloo, where there will be a vigil service at 6 p.m. Friends also may call after 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church.

He was born on April 6, 1922, in Dubuque, son of James W. and Roseline Delaney Wickham. He married Genevieve Stratton on Oct. 3, 1944, in Fort Wayne, Ind.

He was employed with Illinois Central Railroad as a conductor for 41 years, retiring on April 6, 1982.

He was an Army veteran, serving with the railway battalion in the European Theatre during World War II, where he received a purple heart.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Rose Ann (Alan Main) Birkett, of Peosta, and Carol Lyn Wickham, of Cedar Falls; a stepson, Terry Morrolf, of Fort Wayne, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Thomas (Brenda) Wickham, of Epworth; and three sisters, Sr. Rosemary Wickham, OSF, Sr. Jeanne Wickham, OSF and Helen McClain, all of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, James Birkett; and his faithful canine companion, Darth Vader.
