CEDAR FALLS - Heinz Unger, 90, of Bemidji, Minn., formerly of Cedar Falls, died at his home Wednesday, Feb. 15.

He was born Dec. 24, 1921, in Chemnitz, Germany, son of Hermann and Johanna L. Wagner Unger. He married Alma C. Guth on Dec. 23, 1944, in Rangsdorf, Germany. She died Oct. 16, 2002.

Mr. Unger grew up in Germany, graduated from tech school, and served in the Army and Air Force for Germany during World War II. He became a U.S. citizen following World War II in 1948. He retired from the John Deere PEC in 1983, after 35 years of service. He was a member of Trinity and Ascension Lutheran Churches in Waterloo, and was a charter member of Ascension.

Survived by two sons, Mark (Nancy) of Bemidji and James (Cathy) of La Grange, Ky.; and a grandson, Drake Unger.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ascension Lutheran Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball and for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church.

Heinz lived in Cedar Falls for 43 years, beginning in 1959, and later lived in Mentor in Ohio, Rice, Minn., then Bemidji for nine years. He enjoyed church activities, fellowship, and travel with his Ascension and UAW friends, especially trips to Europe, including Germany.
