WATERLOO - Laverne F. Sommerfelt, 74, of Waterloo, died Friday, Feb. 17, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home of colon cancer.

He was born Feb. 1, 1938, in La Porte City, son of John F. and Lydia C. Weltzin Sommerfelt. He married Shirley Fuller on Aug. 29, 1959, in Waterloo.

Mr. Sommerfelt worked as a farm hand for six years and then as a painter for the J.J. Meany Casket Co. for 38 years, retiring in 2000. He also was president of the local steel workers union for many years, and was a caretaker of the Burton Avenue Baptist Church for 40 years.

Survived by his wife; a son, Randall of De Soto, Wis.; three daughters, Sandra (Mark) Krug of Waterloo, Lavon (Russell "Allen") Damme of La Porte City and Gloria (Bret) Brecunier of Fredericksburg; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Delbert (Vivian) and Leroy, both of Independence; and a sister, Bertha Willard of Van Nuys, Calif.

Preceded in death by four brothers, Ervin, Lorenz, Carl and Ralph; three sisters, Edna Hanner, Gladys Foster and Irene Zabel; and a grandson.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Burton Avenue Baptist Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garden View Chapel Funeral Home and for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.
