WATERLOO, IOWA - Herbert W. "Wes" Cole, 96, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Feb. 5, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home of natural causes.

He was born Sept. 16, 1915, in Whittington, Ill., son of Edward and Emma Briley Cole. He married Thelma Seaman July 8, 1951, in Valparaiso, Ind. She died June 23, 1990.

He graduated from Benton Township High School in Benton, Ill., in 1934. He was an executive vice president at Headford Brothers & Hitchens Foundry from 1957-75, and then at National Bank of Waterloo for 10 years, retiring in 1986. Mr. Cole was an officer in the U.S. Navy for 22 years during World War II and the Korean War, receiving an honorable discharge in 1957 as a lieutenant commander. He earned the Purple Heart and European-African-Middle East Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, Korean Service, and Navy Occupation Service medals. He was a life member of Military Officers Association of America, and a member of Waterloo Elks Lodge, U.S. LST Association and the USS Arizona Reunion Association.

Survived by two daughters, Carolyn (Kevin Evans) Cole of Waterloo and Karen Lesa (Rux) Currin of Wilmette, Ill.; and a grandson, William Currin of Wilmette, Ill.

Preceded in death by five brothers, Ray, Ernest, Robert, Harry, and Paul in infancy; and a sister, Pansy.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Locke Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Central Christian Church.
