Dorothy Mae Hamer, 81, of Hudson, died Sunday, September 21, 2003 at Allen Memorial Hospital due to complications of surgery.

Dorothy was born to Edwin R. and Clara (Appel) Aschenbrenner of rural Traer on May 20, 1922. She graduated from West High School in 1939 and Gates Business College. She married Thomas B. Hamer of Waterloo on June 27, 1942 in Norfolk, Virginia. The couple celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary this past June.

Dorothy and Tom spent most of their married life farming north of Traer, until they retired to Hudson in August of 1987. She was an active member of St. Luke Lutheran Church of Traer, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Her passions included teaching Sunday school and confirmation classes, women's Bible studies, and sewing quilts for the mission fields. She was past district president of The American Lutheran Church Women.

Preceding her in death were her parents.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Thomas of Hudson; four sons: James and his wife, Lois, or Traer; Dennis, and his wife, Kathy, of Dike; Timothy, and his wife, Connie, of Wichita, Kansas; Ted, and his wife, Linda, of Traer; two daughters: Beverly, and her husband, Bruce Nelson, of Waterloo; Celeste, and her husband, Sean Coy, of Burnsville, Minnesota; 15 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one sister, Elizabeth Anderson of Waterloo; two nieces, Barbara Anderson and Jane Anderson, both of Schaumburg, Illinois.

Private burial services at Waterloo Memorial Park will precede a memorial service to be held Thursday, September 25, 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Traer. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Richardson Funeral Home in Cedar Falls.
