Gertie Lorraine Smith died on Sunday, November 5, 2006, at her home in Cedar Falls. She was the daughter of George and Grace (Dreesman) Aswegen, was born March 17, 1934 in Grundy County. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Salem Lutheran Church near Fern, Iowa.

On October 16, 1960, she was united in marriage to Benjamin N. Smith Sr at Salem Lutheran Church in Fern. He died October 24, 2000.

Gertie is survived by two sons, George of Frankfurt, Germany, and Tom of Waterloo; five step-sons, Norman of Paso Robles, CA, Martin of Urbandale, IA, James of Bremerton, WA, Benjamin of Manson, IA, and Robert of Anthem, AZ; two grandchildren Thomas Kinnetz and Daniel Smith; several step grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother, Glenn (Shirley) Aswegan of Clutier; two sisters, Alice Van Dyk of Parkersburg, and Vera Mobley of Waterloo.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister Ethel Denner; two step daughters, Shirley and Beverly; and step grandson, Christopher.

Services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 15, 2006 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mallard, with interment in Ellington Township Cemetery in Mallard. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, at Richardson Funeral Home 615 Main St. Cedar Falls (319) 266-3525, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday
