Thomas Berkey Hamer was born to Oscar and Florence (Cripe) Hamer of Waterloo on January 5, 1918. He died of cancer on Saturday, September 2, 2006, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home. He graduated from West High School in 1935 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as Chief Petty Officer aboard the USS Hornet and the USS Enterprise. He became a pilot, taught electronics at the Naval Reserve Training Center, was a draftsman for the City of Waterloo, and worked for John Deere.

Tom was married to Dorothy Mae Aschenbrenner on June 27, 1942, in Norfolk, Virginia. In 1952 he began farming the Aschenbrenner farm north of Traer. He retired in 1982, and he and his wife Dorothy moved to Hudson in 1987. After the death of his beloved wife in 2003, he became a resident of Ridgeway Place in Waterloo. He was an active member of St. Luke Lutheran Church of Traer and a member of the Reinbeck American Legion Post 242.

As a passionate follower of Jesus Christ and a man of prayer and Bible study, Tom served his church as President of the Congregation, council member, Lay Leader, Sunday School Teacher, and as a representative to the Iowa District Seminary Board for the American Lutheran Church. His hobbies included ham radio, crossword puzzles, puns, (a sense of "Hamer") playing the piano and organ, and attending events of his children and grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, brothers Telford Hamer, Merle Hamer, Carl Hamer, and a sister Mary Hamer Lorenzen.

He is survived by his 6 children, 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one brother.

Memorials may be directed to St. Luke Lutheran Church or the Cedar Falls Bible Conference
