Lois Elaine West was born to Louis and Ruth (Corwin) Grassley at the Grassley farm near New Hartford, Iowa, on May 10, 1937. She graduated from New Hartford High School in 1954. She earned both Bachelor and Master degrees from the University of Northern Iowa.
Lois married Don West on August 16, 1955 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Upon graduating from UNI, she started teaching at Hudson High School. She was in her 49th year of teaching business and computers when she left the classroom for the last time on September 27, 2006. After seeing a doctor, she was taken for emergency surgery and passed away during the operation at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, on September 30.
She loved learning because it is an ongoing process. She was an active member of the Hudson Education Association as well as a member of multiple committees serving Hudson School District. Lois belonged to and/or served on the following organizations: Delta Kappa Gamma, National Honor Society, Scholarship, Education Association Negotiations, and Building Level Team for the high school. And, as we all know, being yearbook advisor was her great passion.
Lois touched a multitude of lives in 48 plus years as evidenced by teaching three generations of many families. Hobbies included reading, working crossword puzzles, playing bridge, and attending many UNI athletic events.
She is survived by her husband Don, sister, Bunny Wiegmann, brother Chuck (Barbara) Grassley, sister-in-law Margaret "Peg" Grassley, brothers-in-law Bill (Carol) West, Larry (Marilyn) West, Laurence (Merna) Johnson, sisters-in-law Barbara (Ronald) Schoneman and June (Bob) Hansen.
Preceded in death by her parents, brothers Bud and Gene, and sister-in-law Norma Jean Johnson.
