[Waterloo Courier, Thursday, June 22, 2006]

Burdette Edgar Jans was born May 19, 1918, to John W. and Mary E. Jans in Grundy County, Iowa. He was born the second of five children.

Burdette enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1940. He married Loretta B. Saltou on July 17, 1942, in Rolla, Mo. He served as staff sergeant in the artillery in the South Pacific. Burdette was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned to Iowa to meet his daughter, Paulette, then nearly two years old, and to return to farming. In 1947, his wife, Loretta, gave him his second daughter, Connie. For the next 20 years he farmed in both Grundy County and Black Hawk County.

In 1958 he became a licensed real estate broker and later founded Jans Realty on Main Street in Cedar Falls. As they were partners in farming, Loretta became his partner in real estate. During his career in real estate he served the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Board of Realtors in many capacities: President (1964), Director (1966), Treasurer (1972), Nominating Committee (1974), Realtor of the Year (1978), Membership Committee (1980), Realtor of the Year Committee (1980, 1981, 1984 & 1985), Budget Committee (1972 & 1982), Equal Opportunity Committee (1984-1986), Grievance Committee (1985), Rules Committee (1984) and Ad Hoc Search Committee (1986).

Burdette was also a leader at the First Baptist Church and used his talents in many ways on the Planning and Building Committees for the new sanctuary at Seventh and Main from 1961 to 1964 and later in 1974 to 1976 he worked on the Study and Building Committees for the multi-purpose building at the same location.

In 1970, with two partners, Burdette formed Heritage Homes, Inc., with the vision of providing new housing for a growing community. This would be the first of many visionary projects.

In post-retirement years, Burdette enjoyed the companionship of four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Loretta, his wife of 63 years, has given care and support until his death.
