WATERLOO - Alvin "Al" Neisen, 78, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Allen Hospital.

He was born Dec. 19, 1933, in Gilbertville, son of John N. and Olivia Bernardy Neisen. He married Clarice "Sue" Phillips on Aug. 18, 1956, in Waterloo.

Mr. Neisen was a carpenter with Jens Olesen and Sons Construction and later worked at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works, retiring in 1985. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was active in veterans' organizations and was a life member of VFW Post 1623, AMVETS Post 31, Military Order of Cooties, PT9 and the VFW National Home. He served as commander of Post 1623 and PT 9 and as state commander of Iowa Military Order of Cooties. He was a 30-year member of the American Legion Post 138 and commander of the VFW firing squad Honor Guard for several years.

Survived by: his wife; three sons, Steve (Thelma) of Mason City, Mike (Penney) of New Hartford and Larry (Mary) of Evansdale; three daughters, Carol (Earl Terry) Bean, Janet and Cheryl, all of Waterloo; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Joe of Gilbertville; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: a son, Brian; four brothers, Romain, Robert, Arnold and Gerald; and a sister, Maxine Niday.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Al was a very ardent camper and fisherman. Most weekends would find him with his family camping and fishing.

He was credited with more than 2,500 hours of volunteer work at the V.A.M.C. in Iowa City.
