WATERLOO - Searles H. Hayden, 97, of Waterloo, died Friday, Dec. 23, at his home.

He was born Dec. 3, 1914, in Charles City, son of Merle C. and Lillian Brandt Hayden. He married Alice M. Mahoney Oct. 4, 1937, in Charles City. She died Nov. 9, 1977. He married Lois Whalen June 28, 1979, in Ossian.

Mr. Hayden was owner and operator of Hayden Sign Co. for 60 years, retiring in 2004.

Survived by his wife; three sons, Mike F. (Kay) of Valley, Neb., and Pat S. and Tom K., both of Waterloo; two daughters, Karen Ann (Joe) Parriott of Omaha, Neb., and Kathy T. (Paul) Christensen of Waterloo; two stepsons, Jim (Connie Lee) Whalen of Des Moines and Mike (Kathy) Whalen of Harpers Ferry; two stepdaughters, Kathy (Dan) Andersen of Coralville and Anne Whalen of Minneapolis; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a sister, Arlyne Pritchard; and a granddaughter, Sue Chapman.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be held for an hour before services Tuesday at the church. Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the church.
