WATERLOO - Leroy W. Matthias, 68, of Waterloo, died Thursday, Dec. 22, at Country View Care Center.

He was born Nov. 22, 1943, in Waterloo, son of Melvin and Esther Happel Matthias.

He was confirmed in 1958 at Zion Lutheran Church in Waterloo. He was a foreign exchange student in Scotland in 1961, and graduated from Oelwein High School in 1962. Mr. Matthias earned a four-year scholarship to University of Chicago, graduating in 1966, with a bachelor's degree in philosophy. He also received a degree in architecture.

Survived by two sisters, Carol Swinford of Savannah, Ga., and Maxine Layne of Debary, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth; and a sister, Janet Taylor-Anderson.

Inurnment will take place in Garden of Memories Cemetery. There will be no services. Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Country View Care Center in Waterloo.

The family would like to thank the Black Hawk-Grundy County Mental Health Center, Dr. Piburn, the People's Clinic, and the visiting nurses association for their kindness and support in the past. A special thank you goes to Country View Care Center for the wonderful care given to Leroy there.
