WATERLOO, IOWA - Joan G. Penne, 77, of Independence, Iowa, formerly of Waterloo, died Sunday, December 18, at Buchanan County Health Care Long-Term Care, Independence.

She was born June 17, 1934, in Wadena, Fayette County, daughter of Harry and Alta Whittenbaugh Broughton. She married Burdette H. Penne on September 5, 1951, in Independence. He died December 23, 1995.

Mrs. Penne attended schools in West Union, Oelwein, Waterloo and Cedar Falls. She sold Avon products for a time and later worked in the receiving room at Sears for 12 years.

Survived by two sons, Gary (Rosemary) of Arizona and Mark (Cheryl) of Independence; five grandchildren, Rachel (Keith) Scott-Brace, Karie (Nick) Melvin, Mike (Jen) Penne, Kevin Penne and Joey Penne; 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Virginia "Ginny" (John) Pratt of Waterloo and Helen Main of Orland, Calif.

Preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter; four brothers; and three sisters.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Garden View Chapel Funeral Home, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. today and for an hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Joan enjoyed singing, playing games, bingo, dinners with her family and traveling with her sister Ginny.
