WATERLOO - John Boyd, 59, of Polk City, formerly of Waterloo, died Monday, Nov. 21, while visiting in Kanab, Utah.

He was born Oct. 11, 1952, in Waterloo, son of Burr and Phyllis Boyd. He married Sara Fischer in Hawaii in 2008.

Mr. Boyd graduated from Waterloo West High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1971 and worked as a hydraulic mechanic on P-1 Orion aircraft. He was stationed during various deployments in Thailand, Japan and Diego Garcia. Upon returning to Waterloo he worked for John Deere and then Waterloo Boat and Motor until moving to Ankeny in 1998, where he worked for Lorenz & Jones Marine Distribution.

Survived by his wife; a son, Luke (Katherine) of Plymouth, Minn.; a grandson, Cameron Patrick Boyd; and four sisters, Linda Johnson (Col. Mose Johnson) of Canyon Lake, Texas, Diane Stensrud of Davenport, Nancy Boyd (Jose Maria Bové) of Barcelona, Spain, and Susan Dodson (Steve) of Kanab.

Preceded in death by a brother, Allen; and his parents.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Waterloo, followed by a luncheon.

John was a wonderful kind, gentle, and generous man, husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He loved fishing, hunting and any activity that involved being with friends or family. All that met John were touched by his nature and his smile will be remembered fondly.
