WATERLOO - James L. Hayward, 81, of Waterloo, formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Nov. 5, at Covenant Medical Center following a sudden illness.

He was born Feb. 21, 1920, in Buchanan County, near Independence, son of Lenn S. and Margaret Inez Ocker Hayward. He married Phyllis Catherine Weber on Oct. 5, 1950, in Independence, and they later divorced. He married Donna Marie Cue Luck on Nov. 16, 1974, in Waterloo.

Mr. Hayward graduated from high school in Independence in 1947, then graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. He was a policeman in Independence for 29 years, retiring in 1993 as the assistant chief with a rank of detective. He was formerly a member of the Jaycees in Independence and was a past president of the Northeast Iowa Police Officers Association.

Survived by his wife; three sons, Michael (Linda) Hayward of Independence, David (Claudette) Hayward of Columbus, Ind., and Fay Luck of Denver, Colo.; four daughters, Barbara (Burt) VanHorn of Independence, Lorie (Ed) Holmes of Denver, Robin (Dave) Brainard of Luana and Kathleen Burgess of Marion; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Marvin (Jo) of Independence; and a sister, Phyllis Fuller of Independence.

Preceded in death by a brother, Dale "Shorty;" a sister-in-law, Patricia Hayward; and two brothers-in-law, Clarence "Dick" Fuller and Marvin Cue.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at White Funeral Home, with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery, both in Independence. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at funeral home.

James enjoyed fishing, NASCAR racing and dog racing. He also followed the games of the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears.

Jim was a good man who loved his family and life, and he will be greatly missed.
