Alice M. Bruns, 83, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Monday afternoon, October 23, 2006, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota, following a brief illness.

She was born on November 9, 1922 near Denver, Iowa, the daughter of Bernard and Anna (Hesse) Bruns. Alice graduated from the Waverly High School in 1940 and then was employed by Attorney R. Eldon Laird and the Farm Security Administration in Waverly.

In February of 1942 she became employed by Office of Defense Transportation in Washington, DC., but returned to Iowa 1944 to spend one year studying at Iowa State University in Ames. From 1945 until 1947 she worked at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado. Alice again returned to Iowa and went to work for the Chamberlain Corporation in Waterloo, Iowa, and also Chicago, Illinois. She then returned to college and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Iowa in 1955. During her studies at the University of Iowa she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and was the recipient of the Wilson award from the German Department.

Alice spent two years at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, as a Fulbright student. She then became employed by the CIA in Bonn, Germany; Vienna, Austria; Georgetown, Guyana; Vientiane, Laos; and then in the Washington, DC area. She retired from the CIA in 1979 and returned to Iowa in 1980 to care for her parents.

Alice was a faithful, active member of Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls.
She is survived by one sister, Elaine Dillin of Williamsburg, Iowa, and one brother, Paul Bruns of Seal Beach, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Bernardine Nygren and Marion Desch.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 27, 2006, 10:30 am at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly. Visitation will also be on Friday at the church for one hour prior to the services. Memorials may be directed to Nazareth Lutheran Church.
