Bethel Daisie Swartz, 84, of Waterloo, Iowa, died at home Thursday, May 04, 2006 from renal failure.

Bethel was born on January 21, 1922, on her parent’s farm five miles northeast of Monona the daughter of Walter G. and Daisie (Surring) Jenkins. Bethel graduated from the Iowa Braille and Sight-Saving School in Vinton in 1940. She moved to Waterloo where she worked at Winter Dairy while attending Gates Business College, graduating in 1942.

On June 5, 1943, she was united in marriage to Leonard A. “Sam” Swartz at Grace Methodist Church in Waterloo. In 1956, Bethel became the switchboard operator at Davidson’s Department Store. From 1967 until retirement she was employed as a Dictaphone transcriber with the Iowa Department of Human Services. Leonard died on April 3, 1986 and Bethel has lived in Waterloo ever since.

Bethel is survived by her five daughters: Marsha Sewick, Marilyn Halley-Tarr, Janet Jones, Janice (Mike) Hartz and Crystal Hartmann all of Waterloo; two sons, Dennis J. Swartz of Clearwater Beach, Florida and Ron D. Swartz of Waterloo; twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, and our family’s very special guardian angel, Laurie Walker.

Bethel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard; three sons-in-law, Wayne V. Sewick, PFC Russell L. Halley, Mike D. Jones; one grandson Robert A. Tarr and three brothers, Lyle, Delbert and Dayton Jenkins.

Private family graveside services at a later date in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo. The family will receive visitors on Sunday, May 7th from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at 1205 Wren Road, Waterloo, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the family or the Cedar Valley Hospice.
