Arline Aves, 83, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Sunday morning, February 29, 2004, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo of natural causes.

She was born on November 7, 1920 in Waverly, Iowa, the daughter of W.A. and Amanda (Homann) Gerberding. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly, and attended St. Paul's Lutheran School through the 8th grade. She graduated from the Waverly High School in 1938 and then continued her studies at Wartburg College for the next two years and received her teaching certificate. Arline began teaching elementary grades in Maynard, Iowa until the beginning of WWII. She then moved to Ohio and worked for the Wright-Patterson Airbase for the remainder of the war. Arline returned to Iowa and taught school in Manly, Iowa, where she met her future husband, LuVerne Aves.

Arline and LuVerne were married on February 19, 1948 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. They made their first home together in Manly where Arline continued to teach until they started their family. In 1951 they moved to Waverly and Arline taught in the Janesville and then Plainfield School System. In 1962 the family moved to Waterloo and she began teaching for the Waterloo School District until her retirement in 1983 following 34 years of service to education.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Waterloo. Arline was an avid reader, and loved to cook and bake for her family and friends. Arline's greatest passion, though, was her family. Caring for her family was what Arline did.

She is survived by her husband and best friend of 56 years, LuVerne of Waterloo; her children, Jill Dietrich and her husband, Gene, of Marengo, Iowa, Kim Aves of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Fay Wandrey of Owatonna, Minnesota, Tim Aves and his wife, Denise, of Waterloo, Tracy Knaeble and her husband, Alan, of South Haven, Minnesota; 9 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; one sister, Barbara Baum and her husband, David of Independence, Iowa; and her mother-in-law, Marie Aves, of Manly, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Wilma Isham; and two sons-in-law, Leroy Sorensen and Butch Wandrey.

Celebration of Life Services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Zion Lutheran Church, Waterloo, with burial in the Harlington Cemetery, Waverly.
