[Waterloo Courier, Sunday, September 11, 2011]

Anne Marie Melick, 76, of Cedar Falls, died at home Thursday, Sept. 8, following a long valiant struggle with cancer. She was born Oct. 26, 1934, in Hotchkiss, Colo., daughter of Arthur H. and Arlynn D. Carmichael. The family relocated to Iowa in 1937 and eventually settled in Cedar Falls. She attended the Cedar Falls Public Schools, graduating from Cedar Falls High School in 1952. She married Richard C. Melick June 26, 1954 at Zion Lutheran Church in Waterloo.

She was an active member of Nazareth Lutheran Church for over 50 years and enjoyed the early morning meetings of the Martha Circle and volunteering at the church.

Anne worked in a number of clerical jobs and finally settled on Viking Pump, working in the Personnel Department. She retired in 1993 with over 25 years of service. She and her husband traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada with a large part of those travels in their motor home. Tours in Europe and Scandinavia were also enjoyed. Several cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska, and the Panama Canal were some of her favorites. Outdoor recreational activities were important to her. She loved fishing, particularly with her husband and grandchildren. Many days and hours were enjoyed at their cabin in Wille Resort along the Mississippi River north of Guttenberg, Iowa.

Organized snowmobiling was an important part of her life. She was an active member of the Sno Hawks Snowmobile Club and served several terms as club president as well as many other offices over the past 40 years. She was also active in the Iowa State Snowmobile Association (ISSA), serving in many positions including Region 4 Director and Charity Chairperson. Her efforts were recognized by her peers by being inducted into the "International Snowmobile Hall of Fame" in 2001 and receiving the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the ISSA in November 2009. In 1991 she received the "Iowa Governor's Award for Volunteers" for service to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources as an instructor in the Snowmobile Safety Certification program.

For several years she was active in the local Business and Professional Women's organization and held the position of president.

She loved her family very much and enjoyed the grandchildren to the fullest. The arrival of great-grandchildren were extremely important and she was so proud to be able to hold them in her arms, even as her health was declining.

Survivors include her husband Richard and three daughters, Cindy Johnson of East Moline, Ill., Debra (Lloyd) Eckerman of Washburn, Iowa, and Patty (Chuck) Hemann of Guttenberg, Iowa, five grandchildren and three great-granddaughters. Three brothers, Art Jr. (Shirley) Carmichael of Pharr, Texas, Robert (Christie) Carmichael of Unionville, Mo., and David (Sally) Carmichael of Tripoli, Iowa, and three sisters, June Ceaglske, Nancy (Kim) Dutler and Jean Haes, all of Cedar Falls, and many nieces and nephews.

Anne was preceded in death by her parents and her nephew/godchild, Jason Carmichael.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and one hour before service at the church.
