WATERLOO - Paul S. Stapella, 97, of Rosewood Estate, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 4, 1913, in Waterloo, son of Clifford and Hilka Stapella. He married Bertha L. Coon on Dec. 12, 1934, in Waterloo.

Mr. Stapella graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1932. He worked for 28 years for the Waterloo Police Department, retiring as captain of detectives in 1968. He then was an instructor of police science at Hawkeye Community College for six years. He was past president of the Iowa State Police Association and the Waterloo Police Credit Union.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Stan (Ellen) of Grundy Center and Cliff (Lee) of Gulfport, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, James (Helen) of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday at Locke Funeral Home, where visitation will be held from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday.
