WATERLOO - Virginia E. Phelps, 96, of Waterloo, died Thursday, Aug. 25, at Friendship Village.

She was born Jan. 17, 1915, in Cedar Rapids, daughter of Charles and Blanche Wheelock Kuning. She married Dr. Gardner Phelps on June 16, 1936, in Cedar Rapids. He died Nov. 25, 2000.

Mrs. Phelps graduated from Washington High School and received a bachelor's degree from Coe College in 1936. She was past president of Waterloo Choral Association and also a homemaker.

Survived by two sons, Dr. Laurence (Jan) of Rock Springs, Wis., and Dr. Gary (Josephine) of Brisbane, Australia; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Dianne Phelps of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by two sons, Dr. Charles Phelps and Dr. Dale Phelps; a brother, Clayton Kuning; and a sister.

Memorial services will take place at a later date. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is assisting the family.

Memorials may be directed to the Phelps Youth Pavilion or Trinity Episcopal Daycare.
