WATERLOO - Shirley M. Nemmers, 89, of Waterloo, died Thursday, Aug. 18, at Lakeview Landing, Friendship Village.

She was born Feb. 26, 1922, in Howard County, daughter of Joseph and Violetta Murphy Hogan. She married Robert "Bob" Nemmers Feb. 12, 1942, in Waterloo. He died July 5, 2009.

She graduated from OLVA Academy. She worked in the catalog department at Sears for 18 years and was a member of the Elklets and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. The couple was influential in developing the Christian Family Movement in the Archdiocese of Dubuque.

Survived by six sons, Larry (Sherry) of Springfield, Mo., Steve of Waterloo, Tom of San Antonio, Texas, Mike (Linda) of Grundy Center, Patrick (Marilyn) of Des Moines and Robert "Bobby" (Brigid) of Waterloo; three daughters, Becky (Greg) Hargreaves of Waterloo, Susan (Gary) Gielau of Menasha, Wis., and Michele (Mike) Donahue of Stoughton, Wis.; 37 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Geraldine Lemmon of Seattle and Marjorie Webber of Des Moines; and a sister-in-law, Doris Hogan of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Gene (Donna) Hogan and Ben Hogan; and two brothers-in-law, Gale Lemmon and Wayne Webber.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, with a 4 p.m. rosary by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Cedar Valley Hospice or Friendship Village.
