WATERLOO - Lester Joseph Smith, 90, of Waterloo, died Friday, July 22, at Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center of Waterloo of natural causes.

He was born Oct. 6, 1920, in Aurora, son of William Smith and Emma Meyer Smith. He married Mildred Dufek Oct. 9, 1948, at St. Edwards Catholic Church.

He graduated from Aurora High School and served in the U.S. Coast Guard in the South Pacific during World War II. He then worked for Merchant Motor Freight, Gateway, retiring from H&W Motor Freight in 1983.

Survived by his wife; two daughters, Patricia (Jeff) Delagardelle of Cedar Falls and Kathleen (Matt) Kinley of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Richard (Carlene) of Crol Stream, Ill., and Robert (Renee Brown) of Waterloo; six grandchildren, Dawn Delagardelle, Maureen (Chris) Payton, Steven Smith, Danielle Smith, Jennifer (Drew) Sommerfelt and Sarah Kinley; and three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Delagardelle, Gwen Sommerfelt and Syndee Smith.

Preceded in death by a brother, Harold; and a sister, Donna Moeller.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Edward Catholic Church with full military rites conducted by Waterloo Amvets, Post 19 and Evansdale Amvets, Post 31. Public visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, with a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Mayo Clinic in his name.
