Katherine Elizabeth (Holmes) Mahaffey 1919-2007

EL PASO - Katherine "Kay" Elizabeth Mahaffey, 87, of El Paso, died at 9:50 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 3, 2007) at Heritage Manor Nursing Home, El Paso.
A family graveside service will be Tuesday morning at Evergreen Cemetery, El Paso. A Celebration of life service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Christ, El Paso, with the Rev. John Libert and the Rev. Wes Ooms officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be made to El Paso Rescue Squad, United Church of Christ or the charity of the donor's choice.

Calvert & Froelich Memorial Home, El Paso, is in charge of arrangements.

Kay was born on Dec. 10, 1919, in Rural Gilbert, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Etta Christine Peterson Holmes. She married Curtis Wesley Mahaffey on March 31, 1943, at the Riverside Cathedral in New York, N.Y. He preceded her in death on March 31, 1996.

Also preceding her in death are her parents and two brothers, Herman Theodore Holmes and Torvald Johannis Holmes.

Surviving is a daughter, Linda (Frank) Betts; a son, Mark Mahaffey; three grandchildren, Bryan (Tamara) Betts, Alex (Julie) Betts and Katherine "Katie" (Neil) Jeffreys; and seven great-grandchildren, Emma, Conner, MaKayla, Emily, Ethan, Aiden and Allison, all of El Paso.

Kay was a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Rapids and taught music at schools in Bloomfield, Iowa, El Paso and Secor.

She was member of the United Church of Christ in El Paso, where she directed music for many years.

She was known for being the traditional loser at her local bridge club.
