LA PORTE CITY - John Patrick O'Brien, 73, of La Porte City, died Monday, June 20, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo.

He was born Nov. 29, 1937, in Elizabeth, N.J., son of Sean and Mary O'Reilly O'Brien.

Mr. O'Brien worked mainly in road construction for 40 years and was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survived by his companion of 33 years, Jo Ann Jones of La Porte City; two daughters, Angie (Andy) Peters of Anamosa and Amanda Jones of Waterloo; a son, Lee (Marsha) O'Brien of Monticello; 10 grandchildren, Bobbie, Christina, Alicia, Tommy, Andrew, Zach, Koree, Nick, Denise and Avery; and nine great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his parents; and a great-grandson, Kasey O'Brien.

Memorial services 11 a.m. Wednesday at La Porte City Funeral Service, preceded by an hour of visitation. Full military honors will be accorded by La Porte City San Diego American Legion Post 207 and VFW Normandy Post 3983.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

John was a jack of all trades and loved woodworking. His hobbies included fishing, puzzles, models and bird watching.
