HUDSON - Clifford Michael Murray, 83, of Hudson, died Monday, May 2, 2011, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, following a long illness.

He was born April 1, 1928, on a farm in rural Clay County, the son of William J. and Gertie (Lepper) Murray. He attended school in Everly, graduating with the class of 1945. He enlisted in the Coast Guard and was a World War II veteran. Following his discharge, he was employed at the Everly News, where he served as an apprentice printer.

On Aug. 1, 1948, he was united in marriage with Evelyn Dirksen of Everly. Cliff became manager of Hudson Printing Co. Inc., publishers of the Hudson Herald. He was assisted by his wife, Evelyn, who worked by his side until her death in 1996.

Cliff and Evelyn became the parents of five sons, Raymond, James, David, Kenneth and Kevin, each of them being employed by Hudson Printing Co. growing up in Hudson.

Always interested in the community in which he lived, Cliff served several years as city clerk in Everly, where he also was the first cub master when the Cub Scout pack was organized there. He served two terms on the City Council in Hudson, the second of which he was mayor pro-tem.

Cliff was a lifetime member of the Lutheran church, having served in many board positions as a deacon, a trustee, vice president and president of congregations he was affiliated with.

Cliff is survived by his five sons and their wives, Ray (Charlene) of Toledo, Jim (Janet) of Faribault, Minn., Dave (Deb) of Hudson, Lt. Col. Ken (Rebecca) of Houston and Kevin of Hudson; 14 grandchildren, Erin (Shilo), Sean, Kate (Nate), Blake, Brianne (Paul), Brooke (Jason), Tasha (Bryce), Tarah (Aaron), Bret, Heather, Allie, Lauren, Jacob and Nathan; seven great-grandchildren, Olivia, Ethan, Peyton, Teagan, Ty, Brady and Tallulah; five stepgrandchildren, Lisa, Tami, Jesse, Abigail and Alexandra; also 10 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Cliff was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Evelyn; three brothers, Kenneth, William and Marvin; and sister Marge.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 6, at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Hudson, with private family cremation interment in Hudson Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo, 233-6138. Memorials to the church.
