LA PORTE CITY - John W. Lamos, 71, of Desert Hot Springs, Calif., formerly of La Porte City, died Monday, Feb. 28, at Hospice of the Desert Loving Care Facility, Palm Springs, Calif.

He was born Dec. 7, 1939, in La Porte City, son of Julius W. and Evelyn Ann Hilton Lamos. He married Beate M. Scherschel, and they later divorced. He then married Karen S. Baird in October 2007. She died in July 2009.

Mr. Lamos served in the U.S. Army in Germany. He worked at the John Deere foundry for many years and retired from hydraulic division maintenance in 1993. He was mayor of La Porte City from 1972-74.

Survived by a son, John M. (Jody) of Gilbertville; two daughters, Theresa L. (Bill) Schmitz of rural Jesup and Jennifer A. (Jason) Newcom of Queen Creek, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; stepchildren; and stepgrandchildren.

Preceded in death by three sisters, Helen A. Bown, Marcella M. Paine and Virginia Lamphier; and two brothers, James and Robert.

Graveside memorial services 2 p.m. Friday at West View Cemetery, La Porte City. Military rites will be conducted by San Diego Post 207. La Porte City Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements
