Edward C. Ahrens, 82, of New Albin, formerly of Waterloo, died Sunday, April 10, 2011, at Thornton Manor, Lansing.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, at Thornburg-DeVries Funeral Home, Lansing. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Thornburg-DeVries Funeral Home, Lansing. Interment will be in New Albin Cemetery, New Albin.

Edward Ahrens was born April 23, 1928, in Dumont. He was the son of Ernest and Nella (Stock) Ahrens. Edward graduated from West High School, Waterloo, then attended Iowa State Teaching College. He married Shirley Hawn in September 1951, and they later divorced. Edward married Sally Mcelhose in 1968, and they later divorced.

Edward served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1950-1952 and was a Korean War veteran. He owned and operated the Dairy Queen in Waterloo. From 1958 to 1970 he owned and operated Pizza Ahrvano's restaurant in Waterloo. He then moved to Spring Valley, Minn., and sold restaurant and bar equipment until his retirement in 1998. In 1999, he moved to rural New Albin where he remained until 2009. Edward loved spending time with his children and grandchildren whom he dearly loved. Edward enjoyed hunting, fishing, taking trips to Florida and his dogs.

He is survived by his two sons, Tim (Vicki) Ahrens and Tom (Chris) Ahrens, both of Waterloo; one sister, Coralee (Vernon) Weber of Coco, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Brooke, Beth, Ben, Amy, Samantha, Charlie, Matt and Ashley; and six great-grandchildren, Lauren, Leah, Kaden, Paige, Lucas and Jacob.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Cole Ahrens; and one sister, Melaine Shriver.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to nurses and staff at Thornton Manor for their wonderful care.
