CEDAR FALLS - Dr. J. Ray Ruetenik, 89, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Bedford, Mass., died Monday, March 28, at Bickford Cottage.

He was born April 10, 1921, in Cleveland, son of Dr. Julius and Florence Gibbons Ruetenik. He married Mary Charlton Allen on June 14, 1946, in Lakewood, Ohio. She died Sept. 5, 2009.

Dr. Ruetenik attended Cleveland College, Case Western Reserve and General Motors Institute; received his bachelor's degree from University of Florida and earned his doctorate in engineering from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. He was an aeronautical engineer at M.I.T. and Kaman AviDyne Corp. in Aeronautical Research and Development, retiring in 1989. He also was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II; was a member of Boy Scouts of America, Minute Man Council, Bedford Zoning Board for 11 years, and the Bedford Bike Council. He was a member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational, Bedford, where he participated in various committees such as the Prison Outreach Group and sang in church choirs since the age of 14.

Survived by four sons, Ted (Judy) of Newburyport, Mass., Tom of Breckenridge, Colo., George (Lynne) of Lansing, Mich., and Jim (Georgina) of Needham, Mass.; a daughter, Carol (Bob) Mayfield of Cedar Falls; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Judy Smallwood of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and a brother, David (Gerri) of West Bloomfield, Mich.

Memorial services: 1 p.m. April 16 at the First Church of Christ, Congregational, Bedford, with inurnment in Brackett Cemetery, Sweden, Maine. Arrangements by Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo,
