WATERLOO - Merle W. Rodgers, 91, of Winter Park, Fla., formerly of Waterloo and Zellwood, Fla., died in Winter Park on March 5.

He was born Oct. 12, 1919, in Dunkerton, son of Elmer J. and Louise K. Schneider Rodgers. He married Alma Dawson on Aug. 6, 1948, in Des Moines. She died June 12, 2010.

Mr. Rodgers graduated from Waterloo West High School. He worked for Waterloo Savings Bank (now US Bank) for 47 years, retiring as senior vice president in 1984. He also was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II; was a member of Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ); was past treasurer for Waterloo Optimist Club; was a member of Martin Lodge 624 AF&AM, Scottish Rite, El Mecca Shrine Club and Waterloo High Twelve; and was a member of Waterloo BPO Elks Lodge 290 and American Legion Post 138.

Survived by a son, Martin (Judy) of Parker, Colo.; two daughters, Mary (Tom) Downs of Franklin, Tenn., and Dr. Linda Gilliland of Maitland, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Mark (Janelle) Rodgers, Kris (Steve) Eveleth, Todd (Stacey) Downs, Jay Downs, Michael (Meghan) Downs, Devin (Ryanne) Gilliland, John Gilliland and Richard Gilliland; and five great-grandchildren, Bethany and Adam Eveleth, Caden Downs, Emmaline Downs, and Gracie Ann Rodgers

Preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Eugene; and three sisters, Alberta Mythaler, and two infants.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), with committal of ashes in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites by Waterloo American Legion Post 138, VFW Post 1623 and Iowa Army National Guard. Visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Locke Funeral Home, where there will be a 6 p.m. Masonic service by Martin Lodge 624 AF&AM.

Memorials may be directed to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
