WATERLOO — Mary A. Charles, 83, of Waterloo, died Friday, March 11, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids.

She was born Aug. 11, 1927, in Des Moines, daughter of Frank and Julia Walker Pitzenberger. She married Robert J. Charles on Oct. 28, 1950, in Waterloo. He died Dec. 11, 1998.

Mrs. Charles attended St. John's and OLVA, graduated from East High School in 1945, attended Rosary College and graduated from the University of Iowa. Mrs. Charles owned and operated Pitze's Inc., which was founded by her parents and included Waterloo School of Beauty, Pitze's Beauty Salon and Supply, until her retirement. She was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church.

Survived by three sons, Stephen (Debbie) of Fairfield, Conn., Frank of Golden, Colo., and Fred (Holly) of Springville; three daughters, Julia Charles of Aurora, Colo., Susan Koontz of Waterloo and Terri (Greg) Churchill of Marion; 11 grandchildren, Court, Tyler and Connor Charles, Graham and Alexandra Churchill, Madeline and Chloe Rohlf, Nick and Jessica Charles, Nathan and Caryn Charles.

Preceded by her husband; and a daughter, Carol Charles Rohlf

Memorial services 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial of ashes later in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Locke Funeral Home, with a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service.
