[Waterloo Courier, Friday, March 4, 2011]

In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.— John 14:2

Mary Ruth Markussen, 81, of Waterloo, died Thursday. She was born in Omaha, Neb., on Jan. 10, 1930, to Arthur and Mary Rodgers. During her life, she was called by many names — wife, Mom, Grandma, the Tupperware lady and, of course, "My Young Bride, Ruth." Before he died in 2008, it was how her husband, Dick, would always introduce her to others. From the time they married in 1949, when she was just 19, to the twilight of their lives, the expression never changed. And neither did their love for each other.

They were always one of those couples. One seemed incomplete without the other. They were truly two halves of a whole. When he left us on earth, she knew he would be waiting for her in heaven. And now, finally, they're together again, walking the streets of gold.

Today, she's enjoying not only the company of her husband, but that of the Lord. While she was busy being a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she also was sharing the good news of the love and salvation of Jesus Christ. In good times and bad, it was the security of her salvation that sustained her. You can read about that good news in John 14:6, Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, I Timothy 1:15, Acts 4:10-12 and especially Hebrews 1:3.

Ruth leaves behind four daughters, Karen Foutch of Waterloo, Carol (Rick) Smith of Russellville, Ark., Arlyne Cervetti of Ocean Ridge, Fla., and Janet Markussen of Des Moines; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard "Dick;" her parents; brothers Raymond and Art; and a son-in-law, Duane Foutch.

Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Richardson Funeral Home, Cedar Falls, with burial Monday in Garden of Memories, Waterloo. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday and for one hour prior to services Sunday at the funeral home.
